Good news/bad news
Sep. 17th, 2025 09:41 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Welp. Remember when you told me I shouldn't need to chair a work meeting while I'm on vacation?
The good news is, I'm not going to.
The bad news is, our ferry to the island we're actually planning to visit, where V's son lives, was canceled. So last-minute that when we got to the port we saw vehicles driving off of it that had already boarded.
We couldn't stay anywhere in the small town where the ferry port is. It has hotels and B&Bs but not enough for an extra ferryload of people at short notice. Poor D had to drive forty minutes back the way we came just for us to get a room at all.
And our ferry crossing has been re-booked, for Saturday. No ferries until then. Allegedly; apparently this can change at short notice. But even if it does, it's hard to plan accommodation or anything else.
And in the meantime we're grateful just to have a roof over our heads (we're staying in the attic, so the slanted roof is only just over my head on this side of the room!). And we'll figure out what happens tomorrow.
But in the meantime, checkout is at 11, and so is this precious meeting. I already told my boss, when we didn't know where if anywhere we'd be tonight to explain, and he wrote back that he was sorry to hear this and to message him in the morning if he's needed to sit in. If! I'm not impressed that even I don't know where I'll sleep tonight and I won't have WiFi tomorrow lunchtime isn't enough to get him to understand that he has to chair this meeting.
Except for this massive snag and the possibility of V not being able to see their kid at all this year, which is a real "other than that Mrs. Lincoln how was the play," we've actually had a lovely day. We all were up and at 'em in good time to leave the nice place in Stirling where we broke the journey last night. We had time to visit the Highland Folk Museum on the way, which D picked up a brochure about when he was in a long queue to buy sandwiches for lunch at the café with the highland coo (Scottish for "cow") statue everyone gets their photo taken next to, including me now, and we were delighted at the serendipity. It was lovely to see an example of the blackhouses that I'd heard V talk about, and a loom shed for weaving the famous Harris tweed.
I am with my two humans and we are going to wait for more decision-making information and capacity after a night's sleep and maybe some updates from the much-cursed ferry operator.
Closing some tabs.

We are also reading Aracelis Girmay’s “You Are Who I Love,” in which the speaker unfurls a list of people they love, people they want to see survive, people doing what those not committed to close and tender attention might call the daily tasks of living: a person stirring a pot of beans, a person selling roses out of a cart, a person crossing a border, a person carrying their brother home, a person singing Leonard Cohen to the snow. You, reader, do not personally know these people, but their motivations spark a familiar feeling—here is someone trying to survive in a world that can render a person unable to get out of bed. You, too, may love a person who cannot get out of bed, which is why you cherish the things that convey, I am trying to stitch together enough small moments to have a life for a little bit longer.

Robert Redford, Environmentalism, and the Most Prescient Movie Ever Made by Dave Leviton is a good write-up.
I may look into a few of his movies when I get home. Meanwhile, here's a All The Predident's Men vid: Me and Bernstein down by the schoolyard by

- AO3 is canonizing more freeform tags! Very, very slowly! This latest update includes cosmic horror and clit play, among others.
- Regal is doing a giant horror October release thing, with a classic horror movie every day of the movement (for variable definitions of classic). Because Regal's marketing is absolute pants, I couldn't find an official announcement of this anywhere, but here's a comprehensive listing on Reddit.
- I started posting my Oasis WIP, one vignette a day, ranging from less than 300 words (today) to probably around 3k (the sex scene if I can ever finish it!!). It is here if you are inclined to read along. I don't think I've ever done daily fic posting in all my years of fandom, and I'm excited about it. And the response so far has been really nice. :)
- And as of Saturday I broke 70k for the year!!!
- Speaking of Oasis... just look at these bozos. Look how happy they are. Can you believe. 😭😭😭
Please note Liam has balanced his maracas AND his tambourine on his sombrero. A shelf hat, exactly what he has always wanted.

My Weekend
Sep. 15th, 2025 09:31 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
On Saturday, I ran my usual D&D campaign. Because a lot of people find this stuff boring, I shall put my brief discussion about it under the cut.
As part of our usual Saturday alliterative errands, Shawn and I stop for coffee. (Our alliteration is: coffee, cardboard, cardamon buns... and then sometimes other that things we struggle to turn into 'c's, like Mendards which we sometimes just call 'cart,' because it's shopping.) This Saturday is was only the traditional three stops. Our cardboard recycling center has closed in Saint Paul, so now we have to drive all the way out to Roseville, which is... annoying? Though it may mean that we will return "car" to our alliterative errands as the car wash place is out in the same direction.
Anyway, my point in bringing this up is that my barista often ask me if I have fun plans for the weekend and so I mentioned D&D. One of the guys there also runs a campaign and GUESS WHAT THEY'RE PLAYING??? Yep, the same thing we are: The Curse of Strahd. Like me, he's having to do some heavy homebrewing to make it fit into the play style of his group. We both joked that we might be using some of the same source materials but there's no way we're playing the same game.
Which is what I love about GMing and RPGs in general.
( So called boring stuff... )
Other things I did this weekend was start watching Altered Carbon. And, before you ask, no, I'm not watching it for the podcast. It came up when I was looking for something new and I thought: why not? I hear that the second season isn't as good, but I'm enjoying the story so far. To be clear, however, thanks to all the shounen anime that I consume I have a LARGE tolerance for what is essentially splatterpunk. I would not recommend this show to anyone squeamish about blood, gore, or realistic violence. It also treats women (particularly sex workers) as disposable and so has gotten the reputation as misogynistic, but I'm really enjoying two of the women characters in it SO FAR. We'll see how it all plays out as I go along. I'm only up to episode four, I think.
Netflix also reminded me that I need to continue with The Summer Hikaru Died, but I am waiting for a few more episodes to drop before I return to that one. At some point, too, the anime is going to go past what I've read of the manga, and I'll have to decide if I should go to the library and check out any new volumes or if I'm cool with letting the anime carry me. I'll probably be cool with just going with the anime? Sometimes you just have to because the English language release is that much further behind?
Anyway, my alarm went off for my writing accountablity Zoom so I should head off and try to do some writing!
