Who wants to play?
My main problem with trying to do it is, honestly, I'm really awkward about jumping into it with a bunch of strangers, and my knowledge is so random (I've done a handful of indie games at cons, and other than that it's mostly been second edition AD&D, with my mother, who throws about half the nitpickier rules out the window) I'm never sure where to start. I tried once to get together a group so I could run it, I think I started from way too vague a point, and at a time when too much was going on, and it never went anywhere.
It came up again a couple of days ago, and honestly, I'd really like to try again. And while I'd happily take links to relative-newbie-friendly games you know of online -- no, seriously, if you have anything shove it my way -- I also figure this would be more likely to work out for me, so here's a suggestion, and a poll.
I would be up for running a campaign for a small number of players -- maybe somewhere between 3 and 6, is my first thought -- but only on one of two games, both of which I'm sort of familiar with and think I could come up with a story for.
Part-Time Gods is urban fantasy deities -- people become gods (are given their powers, their natural powers awaken, it varies), and have to balance their mundane, mortal life with their life as a member of a pantheon. There's a new version slightly different from the one I played, but it seems to mostly run on D10s. It has less of a plot built into the story, but I'm pretty sure I could find one, because GODS. Landing page with somewhat more info here.
AMP is modern superheroes -- similarly, people's powers develop and they have to figure out what to do from there with their day-to-day life. It starts in a place where AMPs are hidden and a recent development, and the guidebooks have an overarching story for the world that a campaign can be built along (or ignore entirely, if it goes that way). It runs largely on D20s. Landing page with somewhat more info here.
Both are more modern, both are built around a sense of balancing your mundane life and your supernatural life but that part could be ignored, both have people with powers dividing into groups with different outlooks for what the powered people should be doing with themselves. (They're from the same company and people, they're similar in some ways; this is part of why I feel like I could do either.) My personal preference is for an RP-heavy campaign, and they both could likely support that, I feel.
If somebody wants to step up and offer to run something else, I'm also up for that and willing to help get a group that might work well together going. Or to start two groups! I just really want tabletop, guys. I want it so badly.
If any of this sounds of interest to you, feel free to fill out the poll below, and hopefully a group can be gathered? :D

Anything you can think of that would turn a game into an absolute no for you? (Feel free to PM if this isn't enough space.)
Any questions, or anything else to say?
♥ to you all, and if you have any other questions or anything, feel free to either comment or PM me or whatever.

It seems like you'll have enough on hand to start up a game and post, so I'm excited to hear about future adventures!

(My RP game is running an asynchronous D&D game using a roll bot, so we could totally do it on Discord.)

(Also, if you do want to poke the poll and at least let me know if anything sounds particularly good to you, let me know? It's a way to help figure out plot hooks and ideas, so. :D)

My long-form RP group has an asynch D&D game and it basically goes "DM posts something players have to reply to in the IC chat room, players have X amount of time from when the DM posts to reply to it (IIRC, we have 12 hours, though that can be stretched if someone knows they're not likely to be able to get online in time), and we let a bot do the rolls". We have people from all over the world and it would be impossible to figure out a time when everyone -- 3 from the US, 2 from Great Britain, and one from Australia -- could meet up online due to time zones.

I was planning on doing things in group sessions, I'm leaning towards voice chat but not set on it yet -- though if we can't land a group who can be around at the same time that may be a good way to go with it. That said, I'm definitely willing to limit game time so that everyone can be comfortable (and maybe shorter, more frequent sessions would be easier on everyone - and give me more time to prep, because improv is not my greatest skill as a GM, heh).
They're also, to be honest, both really forgiving games for people to miss sessions or even just parts of sessions, especially Part-Time Gods, which builds the assumption that sometimes your character will have to miss a part of the story to go to work/take care of their responsibilities into the gameplay mechanics. If you're (general you, not necessarily you specific ♥) willing to play a character who doesn't feel the need to be deeply involved in every ongoing thing, it's really easy to sit out a couple of sessions and let them get brought up to speed by the other PCs the next time you can jump in.
(That said -- if you don't think session RP would work for you at all, honestly, I'm willing to try running a really small, ongoing asynch game for you, or maybe you and someone else if we can find someone interested? It'd probably end up a slow-moving game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for anybody's ability to keep up with it. XD I really love these systems, I feel like there's a lot of stories to tell in them, and I think I could target one towards a really small group, or even a single player, in a way that could be interesting. [Hell, off the top of my head, there's a group stated to be nomadic in PTGs - you could run a single player game on a member of that group, following them from place to place as they build things up and get tangled in a series of small plots, or something like that.])
(... Hello, my Special Interest Brain has kicked in and I may be mildly obsessive and seeing plot hooks for this game everywhere right now.)

That said -- there really does seem to be interest in that kind of game, and I would be pretty happy to attempt to run both, so maybe something can be worked out. I'm gonna try and poke people interested over the course of the weekend, so we can see where the chips fall maybe!

if you're looking for assets...
also, if you'd like, you hereby have permission to use any and all images you find on my deviantart account for things like npcs or character portraits. if you can find any that work for your settings, that is.

dA is pretty good for gaming assets in general. here's a few links to groups that might be relevant to your interests:
https://www.deviantart.com/fantasy-npc/gallery/
https://www.deviantart.com/r0l3pl4y3rs/gallery/

most of those should be fine to use noncommercially. if you're not sure about any one piece, they should have licenses listed. many are creative commons and can be used in any game you happen to run so long as you're not charging money.

The game I finally jumped on when it showed up on ks, was Quest The Roleplaying Game, for its ease of entry, rules-light and story-heavy approach. Just got the first preview a week ago,and it's looking great so far. (I also nabbed the Humblewood free preview, because fluffy woodland creatures, yes please!)
Unfortunately, working on a boat, I only have bandwidth to do voice/video game + extended periods of free time when I'm home. Hoping to manage maybe starting up a slower RPG here on dw, still fiddling with the potential format of it all.
Best of luck with your games, I'm sure they'll be a fabulous time!
