My body is your body, I won't tell anybody
Hello new people! Or curious possible new people, as the case may be. I've just gone and close to doubled my reading list through the multifandom friending meme, so I figure I ought to say hello. I have an about me for the basics here, but some other notes of interest/things you might want to know:
- I will occasionally talk about Bast, my partner, who I live with and adore completely. They're also on DW as
brightandravenous and they tend to hang around here a little. We also have two cats, Vaska and Persephone, who you can see on the last post.
- We live about ten minutes away from my mother, my grandmother, and my two younger brothers. There's been a lot of family shit going on in the last couple years, and the ridiculous amounts of family drama are not actually over yet, so that may come up on occasion.
- I put myself down as "massively multifannish", and it's the best description, really. I started in Harry Potter in around 2004 and as I go, I just collect fandoms without ever dropping any of them. I will possibly attempt to throw together some kind of fandom list at some point, but honestly, they always end up so long without me actually feeling like they're all on there, so we'll see. (I also massively multiship basically everywhere, and will consume all the fannish media I can get my hands on. I am picky in some ways when I get into things, but that is not one of them.)
- I sometimes go quiet for long periods of time. Socialization is a thing I have a lot of trouble on, and I'm working on it. I've run on an awkward balance of badly wanting to be more social and having anxiety attacks any time somebody tries to talk to me for years now. It's been a strange and uncomfortable place to be, and I've got a myriad of mental issues that play into making it more difficult (mostly anxiety and self-esteem issues, in a nutshell, but there's other stuff that I just don't want to dive deep into right now). Right now I'm working very hard on reaching out more, or at least making myself more available to be reached out to, because I get very lonely and disconnected and I'd really like to talk to people more; but if I disappear for a while, drop a conversation for a few days unexpectedly, or seem kind of quiet, I promise, that's much more about my issues than anything else.
On the subject of how I use this journal, right now it's very sporadic and sparse, but I'm hoping to change that soon. I'd like to start talking more about things I'm reading/watching/listening to/playing/etc. I also might start doing fic/vid recs soon; I've been meaning to do them for years, and I've tried to start in various ways separate from my main journal space, but that's never worked for me, so I think I'm going to try to start them here and see how that goes.
Other things I'm hoping to discuss more as I work on them: cooking, knitting, learning to play the hand drum, the attempt to set myself up professionally as a freelance editor, doing tarot on a more regular basis, doing witchcraft/religious things on a more regular basis, trying to write, learning to vid and possibly podfic.
As access goes: I generally automatically grant access as I subscribe, but I think I missed that out in a few places. Generally my rule of thumb for locking is: specific real life information, anything indepth on mental health (both reflection and breakdowns), certain writing stuff (mostly talking about difficulties writing, and also worldbuilding/plotting stuff, especially for original fiction), and anything I'd be uncomfortable with family stumbling onto if they somehow floated this way (mostly issues and complaining relating to family members).
If you're interested in seeing any of that and I didn't give you access, feel free to give me a poke. On the other hand, if you want to subscribe but really would rather not see that kind of stuff, please feel free to ask me to take you off, no hard feelings. And on that subject, feel free to add without comment, comment very little on anything, remove as necessary, etc. I am chill on all of these things.
Aaand I'm running out of things to say without rambling horribly, and I need to go start work for the day, so I'm gonna leave it there. If you're interested in hearing me ramble about anything I mentioned here, in my intro post, or over on the friending meme, I'm hoping to start posts for a chill version of the December talking meme tonight or tomorrow, so feel free to go suggest a topic. Or just ask questions. Questions are great.

My family has been through some really shitty stuff for the last few years, so you have my sympathy. It's hard to deal with sometimes.
Interesting that you're into magic and tarot! I rarely talk about it in my journal, but those are my interests as well, although I've taken the ritual magic(k) approach. :)

start; it's a lot easier to let it be known in advance than try to explain after the bad times hit. Glad does not seem like a good word to use for this, but it's always good in a way to have other people around who understand this kind of thing.
Yikes, I'm sorry; it's never great when things happen at all, but years of it especially is bad.
Oh, that's cool! I was actually raised in a Wiccan family, so my practice tends to go in a very Wicca-flavored direction even now that I'm not so much formally religious. I am much less familiar with ritual magic, but it sounds interesting, and I've been meaning to look into it more for a while now just to expand my knowledge in general.

but yeah going back to an old fandom and finding some amazing new stuff is an especially pure kind of joy :)

What is one of your fandom recs that you'd like to make, maybe one you read/watched/etc recently? Just the bare title or link is enough, you don't have to do a review or summary or anything to answer this.
What do Vaska and Persephone like to do for fun? Are they wiggly playful kitties, or sunbeam snoozers, or pouncy lurkers, or constant lap-seekers, or what?
What is something smaller than a tin of mints, and not particularly expensive, that still brings you joy? Either something you have or something you want.

What kinds of things do you knit? I just started this past spring, but I pretty much dived in head-first and it very much feels like a long-term hobby.

This page is a good general run-down about needles, though it doesn't go deep into all the different types. What I wish someone had told me when I got started is something I later found in a library book: wooden/bamboo needles grab onto artificial fiber (e.g. acrylic, which most very cheap yarn is made from) particularly strongly. This might be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how tightly you knit and how difficult it is to keep the stitches from slipping. (For me, if I'd known, I never would have bought a single set of bamboo needles after the pair I learned with. I knit tightly and trying to slide my stitches along bamboo needles is a pain in the ass no matter what kind of yarn I'm working with.)
Here's a good instructional page on reading charts, since a lot of patterns are charted rather than written out.
Here is a collection of excellent tutorial videos for different techniques. Rather than try to learn them all at once, I've found it works well just to look up anything in a new pattern I don't already know how to do, before I get started.
I hope some of this ends up coming in handy eventually!
