Sunshine Challenge: Reccing Time, Small Fandoms Edition!

[community profile] sunshine_challenge's third challenge is to share your squee and rec your canons. So I am gonna talk about a whole list of my favorite tiny canons, because I read What canons should really have more fans? and my brain immediately shouted like five different things.

So here's a small part of my stable of tiny-to-nonexistent fandoms I really want there to be more people in, and some things I love about them/reasons to check them out. I'm also throwing in something I personally really want to glee about, or write about, or whatever, with more people, just because I can. XD

I tried not to ramble too much, but if you're interested in more info about any of them (or trigger warnings, because some of them really need them), feel free to ask. :D

(As I am aiming towards smaller things, I'm not gonna talk about my current obsession which is not so small, but I will say that I am currently hung up on The Umbrella Academy, which I really loved and think is worth a shot if you find the premise interesting.)

American Murder Song
What is it: Albums, with additional story/narrative provided by some youtube videos and live shows.
Where to find it: All five albums are on Spotify, and on the youtube channel, along with the supplemental videos.

Short sell: Murder ballads and history, oh my! This project is a series of murdery songs done by the guys behind Repo! The Genetic Opera. There's some amazing music to be had to begin with, and it's worth looking into the songs just for that -- give The Devil In Camp, Pretty Lavinia, or their cover of Pumped Up Kicks a shot to get a feel for what you're in for. Then throw in some fun mythology through live show bits and the youtube channel, about two men who made a pact with Cain to tell the stories of killers through time, and you've got a great breeding down for creativity and a wonderful soundtrack baked right in.

Come and find me if you're into: Anything that involves Storm and Tender meshing with other murdery canons. I really want to write episodes of the Black Wagon "show" around various fandom's killers, in particular.

The Bifrost Incident
What is it: An album that is basically a radio play - it tells a story through narration, dialogue, and music.
Where to find it: Bandcamp, youtube, and Spotify.

Short sell: Norse myths in SPACE that takes a weird freaky turn! It's got a really interested framing narrative, to start with -- a train that infamously disappeared from its maiden voyage between the stars suddenly shows up, eighty years late, and we follow an inspector trying to piece together what happened through the footage. Then we get fantastic music, and a great stable of characters, and a really interesting story. The band behind it, The Mechanisms, is always good for fascinating and very queer retellings in space, but though Bifrost took a bit to grow on me, it's probably their tightest story, and the one I'd most love to see sprout more of a fandom.
Also if you're into The Magnus Archives, Jonathan Sims plays the investigator and is one of the main singers of the band, and from the few episodes of Magnus I've heard, Bifrost especially goes very well with it.

Come and find me if you're into: Anything -- this is the other fandom eating my brain lately -- but especially queer freedom fighter wives Loki and Sigyn because I love them.

The Devil's Carnival
What is it: One short (45 minutes) movie, followed by a feature length sequel.
Where to find it: The first movie bounces around various streaming services. I believe right now it's on Amazon Prime and Shudder, and the second might be as well?

Short sell: Hell is a carnival where Lucifer reads Aesop's fables, Heaven is the golden age of Hollywood, and everything has fantastic music and interesting visuals. TDC is also done by the people who did Repo, and falls more in line with that then Murder Song generally does. The first movie is not super long, but it is tight and fantastic and there was a period there where I could just watch it over and over for days. The second took longer to grow on me, but man, the music is still really good, and it introduces some characters I greatly enjoy and would love to see more fic about.

Come and find me if you're into: There is no Lucifer/Ticket Keeper on Ao3 and I just find this to be wrong, please make this ship happen.

Her Story
What is it: A video game.
Where to find it: Available for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android. I don't have a good clip or anything to offer, but here's a video reccing it that might be of interest if you want more info first. (I have not watched that video in a while; I remember it being not particularly spoilery, I'm sorry if I'm wrong.)

Short sell: It's a video game about a woman talking to a police. You have access to a police database, and you have to dig out as many clips as you possibly can by searching for keywords. You can only turn up the first five clips that word or phrase is spoken in, so you have to try and come up with new keywords based on the info you gather, trying to unravel who this woman is, what she's done, or if she's done anything at all, and why you're looking at this at all.

Come and find me if you're into: ... Everything I want is spoiler-y. But honestly I just like to watch people react to this game so if you want to share impressions or liveblog or whatever I will glee. I have a small obsession with this game.

The New Albion albums
What is it: A series of play-like albums telling stories in the same world.
Where to find it: The main series of albums is all on Bandcamp! Start with The Dolls of New Albion, then Radio Hour, then Atompunk. ...If you're still in for more at the end of that come talk to me and I will give you a listening guide and links to other supplemental bits. XD

Short sell: Musicals telling a series of stories about a weird town! I... there is so much in this fandom to explore, okay. First of all, it starts with a steampunk, dieslepunk, and atompunk musical trilogy. Second, the town it's built around is fascinating and has so much to play with. And then it branches out from there and develops more mythology, more to play with, just more... everything. I'm not sure how to sell the whole thing because it varies so much, but the first musical follows, basically, how four generations of the same family fucked this town over horribly, and also brought back the dead.

Come and find me if you're into: Anything, man. Anything. I love these musicals, I want more for them.

The Path
What is it: A three-season TV show.
Where to find it: It's a Hulu original, so that's the only place you're gonna get it properly.

Short sell: It's a soap opera about cults. Look, I'm selling this based on only having seen the first season of three, because there's something I badly want from this fandom and still cannot get anywhere. XD But I found it interesting -- it has some interesting characters with some interesting stories, and I was definitely into it enough that I spent the entire night awake burning my way through the first season. Someday I'll go back to the rest, but I really did like the beginning. (Also: Hugh Dancy! Aaron Paul! Cam Winston Brian Stokes Mitchell in a small role! Raul Esparza, eventually!)

Come and find me if you're into: I have desperately wanted about five different Cal/Sarah/Eddie AUs since around midway through episode one and this is The Reason I want this show to have a real fandom, so if you get a few episodes in and think you'd be into that just... come talk to me and I will ramble forever at you.

(Also since I'm promoting my own tiny self-interests and desires for these fandoms, uh, it's not quite small enough I wanted to throw it on here, but I am also recently quietly consumed with the Heathers musical and a really deep desire for stories exploring a dynamic with female!JD, so if that interests you... here I am. Hit me up, friends.)

I was going to throw more things on here -- specifically my list of movies that give me interesting thoughts and that, while I don't necessarily want fic for, would be very interested in seeing more fic inspired by. But, uh, this is getting pretty long, and the new challenge is coming up very soon, so I'm gonna leave it at this.

I might start a series of posts talking about those movies, though, so if you're interested, stay tuned. It's a lot of thrillers, and also a lot of movies with an idea I really like and flawed execution.

I am so intrigued by American Murder Song! Adding to my list of things. :D
