[ introduction / about / things to know ]

in a nutshell:
  • Currently going by A or August, but names are weird, and nicknames/username shortenings are very welcome
  • Early 30s; they/them or it/its
  • Queer; mentally ill (anxious, depressed, neuroatypical, who knows what else); chronic pain and other physical issues
  • Witch, slowly recreating a magical and spiritual practice; raised Wiccan, which still flavors my practice even as I've drifted away from it
  • Creative creature who wants to learn to be creative in as many ways as possible, but mostly a writer and a cheerleader/sounding board
  • Fandom is my favorite fandom, my second-favorite fandom is an ever-rotating list of several dozen
  • I try to keep up with my list, even if I'm not always the best at commenting or updating, but due to a bunch of RL stuff lately I've been having a hard time. Feel free to drop a link or a PM if I've missed something you want me to see or think I'd like.

on friending and commenting:
I add people back pretty much automatically, though it often slips my mind for a while and eventually happens in batches. I generally automatically grant access as well; I will definitely do so if you give it to me. Generally my rule of thumb for locking is: specific real life information, anything indepth on mental health (both reflection and breakdowns), certain writing stuff (mostly talking about difficulties writing, and also indepth worldbuilding/plotting stuff, especially for original fiction), and anything I'd be uncomfortable with family stumbling onto if they somehow floated this way (mostly issues and complaining relating to family members). If you're interested in seeing any of that and I didn't give you access, feel free to give me a poke. On the other hand, if you want to subscribe but really would rather not see that kind of stuff, please feel free to ask me to take you off, no hard feelings.

Feel free to add without comment, comment very little on anything, remove as necessary, etc. I am chill on all of these things. I welcome all sorts of comments, and I'm as happy to take a '+1' or a '<3' as I am a long ramble. I'm usually okay with advice, and try to specify in the post if I'm either specifically seeking advice for something, or would really prefer no advice and just to vent at this time.

I sometimes go quiet for long periods of time. Socialization is a thing I have a lot of trouble on, and I'm working on it. I'm better at updating regularly than I am at commenting on other people's entries, but I'm almost always keeping up with my friends list; I'm just pretty bad at saying anything. I'm pretty much happy to hear from anyone I have added, and I really do want to try to socialize more, so feel free to comment on whatever, drop me links, shoot me a PM, etc.

on fannish things:
My transformative works policy lives on my AO3 profile. My fic output is pretty low, but I'm working on getting better at it. My fandoms list doesn't exist anymore because it's too long and I need to figure out how to organize it, but the closest I have to a main fandom right now is the Umbrella Academy tv show. I also hold a lot of love for Hannibal, Firefly, Welcome to Night Vale (though I'm still trying to catch up from the early years), and a slew of tiny fandoms I'll make excited noises at you about if I see you mention them/get a reference. Also slowly sliding into the Magicians as I make my way through it, and some Youtube stuff I'm still struggling to not view as guilty pleasures (Cracked: After Hours and Escort Mission, Sanders Sides, Buzzfeed Unsolved/Watcher Entertainment, Oxventures).

MCU was my main for many years, but I've been less interested since around midway through Phase 2 and Endgame news finally made me more or less break up with it. Jane Foster and Peggy Carter still rank among my all-time favorite characters, though; I occasionally drift back into fannish stuff for it, and might get dragged back in to the next Thor movie, we'll see. Harry Potter was my first fandom around age 13 and I can't help holding a lot of love for it, despite recent difficulties going back to it, and I do still dip my toe into the fannish side of it on and off, mostly Marauders-era.

Otherwise: I like all sorts of media -- mostly live-action TV and movies, theater (especially musicals), books, web originals, music-based things, with a very small spattering of video games and comics/webcomics; I find anime/manga/animation interesting in theory but never got into it in practice. I love meta stuff about that media, or about fandom and meta itself. Fandom is my favorite fandom, and I love seeing things about what patterns evolve, meta about fandom engagement, or just people getting excited about fandom whether I understand the context or not. I don't bother to put up ships, because to be honest, the things I can't get into are far and few between; I do tend towards favorite characters, but I will get into any kind of fanstuff you shove at me.

I like reviews, thoughts, meta, and headcanons in theory; I am terrible at doing them or responding to them in practice, but I am actively trying to get better at that. I love recs but am only very slightly better about doing those. I deeply love and have many thoughts on vids that I am terrible at articulating in any way except shoving links and gleeful noises at people. I'm working at the time I update this on getting up my first podfic in many years and making that a regular thing. Fannish classification systems are my obsessive joy -- please ask me my thoughts on Sorting Hat Chats if you have a few hours for rambling, and I still haven't read Homestuck but my brother and I have sorted all characters and people we both know into the classpect system.

non-fannish things:
I live in upper Tennessee with my mother and brothers, their dog, and the neighborhood cats that I lavish my love upon. I came from Florida recently, and New York originally, and am still basking in having seasons again a couple years after moving.

I cook, with a fair bit of enjoyment but without any real regularity, and I'm trying to learn how to knit and embroider. I have a collection of enamel pins, and many I'd like to add to that collection eventually. I also collect tabletop roleplay games and information about interesting TTRPGs that exist, although at the time I have nobody to play with and opportunities to do so keep falling through. I like video games, though I'm pretty bad at most of them, and keep trying to start streaming just for fun. Stories and storytelling are a big interest of mine, as is music. I'm a mostly-card-based diviner with seventeen years of Tarot experience, and I have a deep respect for people who can do non-card-based divination, because it fascinates me and I've never been good at most other methods, though I'm trying to learn geomany dice. I have an interest in kink which rarely comes up on here, but I may pop up on other people's posts about it. I like poetry, and regularly go down slam poetry rabbit holes on youtube; I also often do this with choreography videos, video essays and discussions on media, and people reading out loud Tumblr posts.
