Let's talk about TV
Unrelated to life stuff lately, Bast and I have been watching Black Mirror at random. We've both seen some random episodes and meant to watch more, so we've started doing it this way, because in general it doesn't seem to be necessary to watch in order. I've been meaning to talk about TV as I watch it more often for years, so thoughts on what we've gotten through so far.
Spoilers, I guess, if anyone else has been failing to get to the thing and cares. In order they've been watched recently:
(We did Bandersnatch a little too, but my main thought on that is 'buh'. I kind of had a minor freakout immediately following due to some really ill-timed noise combining with the state of waiting-for-jumpscare adrenaline I had going during the show, and I think it wiped any coherent thought I had about it out for now. Maybe if we go poke it again.)
Metalhead (4x05)
We did the first couple a while ago, and honestly this one didn't stick in my head all this much. I don't think it was bad but not quite my thing.
Black Museum (4x06)
Probably my favorite that we've seen so far, and the only thing that makes me kinda sad about watching out of order, because I feel like it would've been a beautiful way to cap off the series so far to finish with. Hell, I may watch it again at the end. There's definitely some less interesting moments, but the reveal and revenge at the end put it way over the top for me.
San Junipero (3x04)
Hoo boy, I really wanted to like this one. I've heard so much about how great and lovable it is and I really wanted it to live up to the good things I'd heard. And I didn't hate it or even not like it, it was just... more meh than expected. The writing fell kind of flat for me, and the relationship didn't unfold at a believable pace and had a weird hot-cold thing going on. On the other hand, the acting was good, the set-up and visuals were interesting; I can kinda see why people got into it, but it wasn't for me.
Playtest (3x02)
I actually liked this one a fair bit more despite the awkward last line/shot. The tension and pace worked for me without freaking me out to the point I couldn't handle it, and so did the character, and it was just twisty enough that I kept wanting to guess what was going on.
White Bear (2x02)
One of the two I'd seen before ages ago, remembered the broad strokes but not quite all the details. Hard to watch, both in the sense of the plot/reveal being intense and that the signal/remembering noise fucking hurts. I feel like Black Mirror sometimes has trouble landing its message - it often feels like it has something to say even when I'm not sure what it is - but I think this one shaped itself around a message, or at least a topic to discuss, pretty well.
I also watched the first two episodes of Galavant - lots of fun, need to watch more - and have been watching lots of random list shit on youtube while I work. I need to watch more things, and read for that matter - I read some of Velvteen Vs the Seasons on the way home from Nashville, which is the most I've read anything non-fic in ages. Gonna have to go back and try to read more of it before I forget what I was reading.
Aaand I think that's all I got.
